I won’t pretend that my children don’t access the internet. They are 10 and 12, and I am a work-from-home parent. I don’t believe in spending my entire day entertaining my children, and besides, they are at the age where they are learning and consuming content all day, every day. The internet is an excellent resource for children, but it can also be a dangerous place.

However, I need to do all I can to ensure that the content my children are exposed to is appropriate and that whilst they are online, they are safe from the dangers of being online. Parents need to ensure their children are accessing the internet safely. In this article, I’ll share some tips on how to keep your kids safe online.

5 Tips to Keep your kids safe online:

Talk to your children about online safety. Explain the risks of online predators, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content.

This is the most important thing you can do to protect your children online. Explain the risks of online predators, cyberbullying, and inappropriate content. Talk to them about staying safe online and what to do if they encounter something they don’t understand or feel uncomfortable with. Remember, there is no age ‘too young’ to start having open conversations with your child about what is good and what is bad behaviour in the online world.

Set rules and boundaries for online use.

Every parent or family has their own set of boundaries regarding appropriate behaviour in life – why should the online world be any different? Some families are gamers, and some are not – what is appropriate in one world is not in another.

This could include limiting screen time, not sharing personal information, and not talking to strangers online. Screen time is a big one because we can all do with spending less time on screens, but for children, tweens and teens in particular, it becomes problematic when they start using their devices for school and in their spare time.

Encouraging them to take a break from their devices is necessary for a healthy lifestyle. You should consider some screen-free activities for children and the whole family.

Use parental controls and internet security software.

There are many different parental control software programs available. These programs can help you block inappropriate content, set time limits, and track your child’s online activity.

Most devices will have built-in parental controls; however, many online apps and programs can help set those controls. They can control everything from which websites children can or cannot access to the different apps and even how much time your child can spend on certain apps. This is extremely useful for social media apps, which many children can get hooked on very quickly.

Similarly you can buy software to provide the best internet security to protect your devices from spam and malware attacks.

Monitor your child’s online activity.

This doesn’t mean you must watch over their shoulder every minute, but you should check in regularly to see what they’re doing online. Again, many devices can send you a weekly or even daily report on how much time your child has been on their devices and even on which apps they are using on their devices.

Be a role model.

Show your children how to use the internet safely by being careful about what you share online and not clicking on links from strangers. This also goes back to the first tip above – talking to your children and telling them what is and is not appropriate.

And, of course, the overall thing to teach our children is that you should never say anything to anyone online that you wouldn’t say to their face.

By taking these steps, you can help your children stay safe online.

Remember, the internet is a powerful tool, but it’s essential to use it wisely.

Here are some additional tips for ensuring your children are accessing the internet safely:

  • Keep the computer in a common area of the house. This will make it easier for you to monitor your child’s online activity.
  • Teach your children how to identify and report inappropriate content.
  • Encourage your children to come to you if they have concerns about something they see or hear online.
  • Get a fast VPN service to avoid bandwidth throttling for families with multiple devices.
  • Be aware of the latest online safety threats and trends. There are many resources available to help you stay informed.

Following these tips can help your children stay safe and have a positive online experience.
