Secondly, plant-based milk is often lower in saturated fat, making it a healthier option whilst also reducing our carbon footprint. Teaching our children about the importance of sustainable choices is a lesson that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Choosing the Right Plant-Based Milk

One of the first steps in our baking adventures with plant-based milk was choosing the right milk for our recipes. There’s a wide variety of plant-based milks available, including almond, soy, oat, coconut, and more. Each type has its unique flavour and characteristics, which can impact the taste and texture of your baked goods.

We decided to try different plant-based milks to see which one worked best for our favourite recipes. Almond & oat milk turned out to be the most versatile options for most of our baking endeavours. It has a mild, slightly nutty flavour that doesn’t overpower the other ingredients in our recipes. For more delicate flavours like vanilla or chocolate, we found that soy milk worked wonderfully. This experimentation allowed us to tailor our baking to our preferences.

Plant-Based Milk and Your Favourite Recipes

Now, let’s dive into some of the delicious recipes we’ve enjoyed baking with plant-based milk. These recipes are scrumptious and perfect for involving your little ones in the baking process.

1. Chocolate Chip Cookies:

Classic chocolate chip cookies are a favourite in our household. We substituted dairy milk with almond milk, and the result was incredible. The cookies turned out just as chewy and delicious as ever. Our girls loved adding the chocolate chips, helping with the mixing, and obviously licking the bowl at the end.

Weekends are for treats, and pancakes seem to be the girl’s choice of breakfast. We found that oat milk is an excellent choice for these fluffy treats. The girls have fun making various shapes and sizes, and we serve them with fresh fruit and a few spoons full of Nutella.

3. Banana Bread:

Banana bread is a fantastic way to use up overripe bananas, and we’ve found that coconut milk adds a delightful tropical twist to this classic banana bread recipe. The girls love mashing the bananas and watching the batter come together.

Muffins are a mainstay, and one our girls love to add their own twist and toppings – fruits are a popular choice. Almond milk works well in most muffin recipes, adding to the moisture and tenderness of the finished article.

5. Homemade Hot Chocolate:

On cold winter evenings, there’s nothing better than a cup of homemade hot chocolate. We use soy milk and dairy-free chocolate chips to create a creamy and comforting drink. The girls love adding marshmallows and a swirl of dairy-free whipped cream.

Incorporating Education and Fun

With the variety of plant milk options to create your delicious treats, it’s also an opportunity to educate our children about healthier and more sustainable options. We’ve even discussed ways of helping the environment. One thing we had in mind was a small herb garden on our kitchen windowsill to show the girls how we can grow our ingredients at home. They’re learning to appreciate yet get very impatient with the journey from seed to plate, but it’s a very rewarding experience to see their little plants thrive and use them for tea.

Moreover, baking together encourages creativity and cooperation. We encourage our girls to experiment with different flavours and ingredients while ensuring they understand the basics of measuring, mixing, and following a recipe. Baking has become a joyful bonding experience for us all.
