How stupid I was. How naive. There I was basking in the warm glow of Spring, forgetting the last 38 years of my life. Spring has sprung, and with it … my annual dose of debilitating hayfever thanks to allergies!!

I’m not exaggerating …

Just when I thought it was okay to go outside, into the warm spring air, bam! When I opened the door to let the cat out this morning, Mother Nature basically whacked me in the face with a sack full of pollen and said “gotcha!”

Hayfever Sufferers Will Know …

And no, I can’t ‘suck it up’, or ‘grin and bear it’ … because firstly, that’s just gross. And secondly … you come talk to me about not using drugs when your symptoms are as extreme as mine!

Hay Fever Allergy Symptoms

Think: snot continually pouring from your nose. Your eyes are weeping so badly that normally oblivious strangers are worried enough about your mental state that they actually break all social convention and ask you if you’re okay when they see this version of you in the wine aisle at Aldi.

That …

allergies and wine joke

Add to that … the sneezing.

No joke, I can sneeze one after the other for a solid 10 minutes. Do you know how exhausting that is?!

In addition to the hayfever, I end up with a sore back and strained tummy muscles. Let’s face it, if it wasn’t for the hayfever, I wouldn’t even believe I have tummy muscles anymore!

I Have A Few People To Thank For My Allergies …

You’d think not, but I do have a list of people I’d like to thank for blessing me with this condition:

Thanks mom AND thanks dad!

There should be some kind of quiz or checklist used before you procreate. If you both suffer from allergies, don’t do it! As the eldest, I think I got both their contribution to the allergy gene …

And my younger sister got … wait for it … NOTHING!

My husband does NOT suffer allergies other than bee stings, but seriously … he’s been stung twice in the last 20 years, I get hay fever for 2 months of the year, every year.

In addition to the other triggers that can strike during any season of the year such as cats, dust and rain on hot tar, some perfume … I’ll stop now!

Were The Kids Spared?

Well, my eldest is also allergic to bees. And my youngest sadly takes after me … sort of.

She has eczema which is triggered by …

  • Chlorine
  • Strawberries, tomatos, any citrus fruit really
  • Biological washing powder
  • Sour sweets
  • Perfumed creams & lotions

*List to be updated weekly!

Fortunately no hay fever though. Lucky kids!

Have a sneeze free rest of your day all! Enjoy spring!
