Ah, the sweet bliss of a restful night’s sleep. It’s something despite our best efforts, it can evade us. Whether it’s because your brain won’t switch off, or your sleep environment isn’t quite right, there are a number of factors that can interfere with your rest. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to set up your bedroom as a haven for rest and relaxation, helping to calm your senses for a good night’s sleep.

5 ways to get a better nights sleep

#1 Start with your bedding

Your sleep setup is a crucial element to providing you with the support and comfort you need as you sleep. From your mattress to bed and bedding, there’s plenty to keep in mind when it comes to setting up your bed. Here’s a quick guide.

A comfortable mattress

Your mattress should support your body through the night, keeping you comfortable as you move about into different sleep positions. When shopping around for a mattress, make sure to test one in-store in your preferred sleeping position/s, take your time, move around, and bring your sleeping partner (if you have one).

A sturdy bed frame

Your bed base is just as important as your mattress, helping to support both you and your mattress through the night. They can also help enhance the life of your mattress by protecting it from wear-and-tear. When shopping around for a bed frame/base, take your style preference, budget, bedroom size, and mattress size into consideration.

Cosy bedding

When it comes to your bedding, your sheets, quilts and pillows should make you feel like you’re in a comfortable cocoon as you sleep. Your sheets should be soft and breathable, your quilts should be fluffy and regulate your temperature no matter the season, and your pillow should support your head and neck, and match the way you sleep.

#2 Add some blackout curtains to your windows

We associate light with daytime and being awake, and the darkness with night and going to sleep. There’s a reason for this – sunlight tells the brain to produce cortisol, which can leave you feeling energised, and the dark helps the brain and body relax and prepare for sleep. That makes the lighting in your space one important factor! Too bright and you might find yourself lying awake all night long.

If you find that your bedroom is bright – even with the lights off and windows closed, then you may want to invest in blackout curtains.

Blackout curtains block out light completely as they are made with additional layers of fabric. They’re widely available, affordable, and can make your room dark instantly. Plus, some styles can come with the added benefits of providing some insulation and blocking out some outdoor noise.

#3 Nod off to some white noise

Just as light can keep you awake – so can too much noise in or around your bedroom. While you can minimise the noise inside by turning off or keeping electronic devices out of your bedroom, noises outside of your bedroom like a neighbour’s dog or sirens, can be much harder to minimise.

For some people, playing white noise can help mask these unwanted frequencies and help you get a better night’s sleep. If you haven’t put away or banned your electronic devices from your bedroom, you can play white noise through an app, or buy a white noise machine for your bedroom which can play a variety of sounds.

If white noise isn’t your pick, you might find relaxing sounds like rain or even a soft playlist can help.

#4 Incorporate some refreshing and relaxing scents

Not only can white noise help you get a better night’s sleep, but some people may also find a scent calming and relaxing. From lavender to chamomile, rose and jasmine, there’s no shortage of scents that can help turn your bedroom into a haven for rest.

There are plenty of ways to incorporate these scents like a diffuser (reed or electric) or even certain sleep mist sprays.

#5 Stick to a schedule

Getting into a night routine can be a beneficial way to drift off to sleep easier. A routine will look different from person to person, but look for activities that help you relax and settle down for the night. This can be as simple as running yourself a bath, or fixing yourself a warm drink and curling up with a book. For others, it may be popping on your favourite playlist and relaxing with some meditation.

Now that you know five ways to set up your bedroom as a haven for rest and relaxation that can calm your senses, you’ll easily be able to get a better night’s sleep.  By ensuring your bedding is comfortable to sleep in, making your bedroom as dark as possible, playing some white noise, breathing in refreshing scents, and sipping away on a relaxing beverage, you’ll be able to get a better night’s sleep every night.
