Getting kids excited about science is one way of encouraging their natural curiosity, so let’s explore how to raise a science lover because raising a science-minded child is not for the faint of heart! Curiosity is a natural, instinctive behaviour that is most notable in young children in their early years as they develop, learn and explore the world they have been thrust into. Science is curiosity, but as our children get older, we want to encourage their curiosity.

Science is fun. Science is curiosity. We all have natural curiosity. Science is a process of investigating. It’s posing questions and coming up with a method. It’s delving in.

Let’s discuss the best ways to raise a science lover and inquisitive child.

Science is how we make sense of the world around us and make ground-breaking discoveries to save lives and make revolutionary changes. We have teamed up with a private nursery in Shoreditch to share tips on how to raise a science lover.

Encourage Questions

Science is a subject driven by the pursuit of gaining knowledge to discover more about the physical and natural world. To help your child develop a love for science, feed their curiosity by taking them out on exciting field trips where they can learn more about the world around them. You can ask them questions about why things are the way that they are to encourage them to do their research and shape them into a young scientist.

Try a Fun at Home Experiment

Science is pretty cool, and the main attraction for most children are the experiments. You can do these together with your child to explore the difference between solids, liquids and gases. For example, you can heat ice lollies by melting them in a pot to demonstrate how to turn a solid into a liquid and a gas by heating it further.

Alternatively, you can buy a home science kit such as the Beaker Creatures Liquid Reactor Super Lab, which I reviewed a few years ago. Check out the video we made below. The girls loved it!

Stargazing and Astronomy

Astronomy is truly phenomenal, and introducing your child to the concept of an even bigger world being out there can help you get your child into science by alighting a new passion. To do this, you can explore documentaries, create a solar system model together, stargaze or use a telescope to explore what’s out there with your child.

Science Programmes

Many science cartoons and educational shows for kids can help get your child interested in science, like Let’s Get Scientific on CBeebies and The Magic School Bus Rides Again. These can give your child engaging and stimulating science lessons on topics like the digestive system, static electricity and how magnets work. But those aren’t the only educational shows for kids; shows about baking, den making and gardening all involve science and can teach your child as they absorb the content on their screen and can also help with how to raise a science lover, because not all screen-time is bad!

Here are some other ways to raise a Science Lover

Science is a fascinating subject, and every scientist has the curiosity of a child. But how can we make sure that our kids will grow up to be scientists too? There are many ways, and here are some of them:

  • read books with your kids about science and let them see science as an exciting adventure,
  • find out what scientists do and share this information with your child,
  • find out about famous scientists and their discoveries
  • talk to your children about what they know about science
  • take them to see experiments in real life
  • take your children to science and natural history museums

I hope this post has provided enough inspiration and tips on how to raise a science lover which has now enabled you to support your budding scientist, astronomist, biologist, chemist or Doctor. Excuse the cliche, but the world is their oyster.
